Street Artists from Barcelona: Art Is Trash at Artevistas Gallery

Barcelona has always attracted artists. Picasso, Miró and Gaudí shaped the city a century ago. Today a new generation works on the streets: on walls, on shutters and, in the case of Art Is Trash, on the rubbish people leave behind.

Art Is Trash at Artevistas

The video above shows the work of Art Is Trash at Artevistas gallery in Barcelona. It is a good example of how street art moves from the pavement into galleries: the same raw energy, the same characters, but now on canvas and in a space where people can see them for longer than one night. See more on the Art Is Trash exhibitions page.

Why Barcelona is a city of street artists

  • Light and climate: people live outside, so art on the street is seen by many people.
  • Old town with character: narrow streets, old doors and shop shutters are a natural canvas.
  • International scene: artists from all over the world come to live and paint here.
  • Tension with the rules: painting in public is tightly regulated, which makes fast, temporary forms of art – like painting on trash – even more interesting.

Who is Art Is Trash?

Behind the name is Francisco de Pájaro, born in Zafra in Extremadura. He came to Barcelona at the end of 2003 and started painting on the street in 2009. His characters are made from old furniture, boxes and bags, and usually disappear the next morning.
